CELT’S WELL BEATEN

Drumchapel United 5 Celtic BC 0

Glasgow and District Youth Football League

Sunday 14th February 2010

Celtic were well beaten against one of their main rivals for the league. Drumchapel United beaten earlier in the season by Celtic were out for revenge. It was the Hoops who started well and Jordan Davidson should have done better with his first chance but was cleared by the home keeper. That urged United on and after 5 minutes the first corner went to the home team, the resulting kick easily cleared by the away side. Celtic were the next to try from a corner but James Pollock’s kick scrambled clear. After 10 minutes the home team were awarded a penalty, Anton Black racing from his line caught the United forward as he was striking the ball. Up stepped the taker to strike low into the net 1-0. Celtic’s defense was in total disarray and after another mix up United were two up, the ball finding the prowling forward, stroking into an empty net 2-0. Celtic were trying with every move to get a hold of the match but Drumchapel were the hungrier and winning all the 50/50 balls. After 25minutes it was three, another through ball on the right found the pacey striker, whose shot was only parried into the net by the diving Black 3-0. The same ball a minute later found the same striker and the resulting strike finding the back of the net 4-0. Celtic heads, now down could not get into the game, Ryan Clark for all skill was closed down quickly by two United players, nullifying his play. Mark McGhee usually the playmaker, playing on the right was less effective as he has been in recent matches, finding the home defenders a match for Davidson and Pollock.

Half Time Drumchapel United 4 Celtic BC 0

Celtic hurting, tactical changes by the coaches, trying to get something from the game, but dealt a hammer blow just after the start, a speculative shot looped over the luckless sub goalkeeper Dylan Harvey to make it 5-0. Celtic down but still trying and a fine save from Harvey seem to assure the Hoops and were starting to make inroads to the home goal. Pollock’s strike easily saved by the home keeper, Davidson’s run cruelly stopped by the defenders trip the resulting free kick harmlessly by the post from Pollock. Another fine save by Harvey after Kieran Barkey’s mistake. Celtic now winning tackles with the inclusion of Ryan Lamont coming on midway through the half for the tiring Ryan Sheilds. The Hoops, working harder and making the tackles but with both teams cancelling each other out, the game finished with the home team deservedly on top. The hungrier team won and took their chances well, Celtic battled well, chances few but will learn from this and will comeback stronger. The league still to be won and the young Hoops well beaten today will still have a chance to claim the title.
